Abstract

This subject deals with the land ownership of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II in Palestine during the period from 1876 to 1937. These lands have been known by various titles including the lands of Jeftlek, the Sultanate, and the Hamidian. The areas of these lands which equal about 2.5 million dunums broke the record of all the ownership that Palestine has witnessed in the modern age. The subject has been approached in three main axes. The first dealt with the factors that influenced the ownership formation specifically the enforcement system that was put in effect due to the economical, social and political conditions of Palestine. The other factor was the development policy adopted by the Ottoman Empire during the age of organization and the resistance of the foreign interpenetration movement. The second axis dealt with the size of ownership and the extent of its spread in the three Palestinian districts: Acre, Nablus, and Jerusalem. It focused in Al-Hawla basin, the sources of the Jordan River, the plain of Bisan valley, al-Fara’ valley, the plain of Jericho, the hill of Irad, the side of Zerqa River, Rafah, and other locations. The third axis was dedicated to deal with the radical changes that overwhelmed the Jeftlek lands. It also concentrated on the process of solving the question of ownership and returning them to the state treasury. In addition it dealt with the attempts of the foreign interpenetration movement specifically the Zionist corporations after the expulsion of the Sultan by the Union and Development Society in 1909 until it was settled during the British Mandate in 1937.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the attitudes of teachers and supervisors towards the use of student guidebooks by students, and investigating any significant differences between teachers’ and supervisors’ perceptions with regard to job, specialization, sex, and site of the directorate they work at। The population of the study consisted of teachers of the academic twelfth grade and all supervisors of all subject matters at the West Bank. All supervisors and a (12 %) stratified random sample of teachers were chosen for the study. The researcher designed a two-part tool for the study; part one solicited demographic data, and part two contained (30) items on which the respondents were asked to respond in accordance with a four-point Likert scale. Both validity and reliability were determined; the Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient was (0.92) and the Spearman Brown reliability coefficient was (0.88). Means, percentages, standard deviations, and One-Way Anova were used to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that the teachers and supervisors had negative attitudes towards the use of student guidebooks, and that there were no significant differences in their attitudes with regard to job, specialization, or site of directorate. Meanwhile, there was a significant difference in their attitudes with regard to sex. The results also showed that teachers and supervisors did not overall agree on using student guidebooks by students since their disadvantageous effects on their achievement were apparent. The study recommended that the existing student guidebooks be revised and evaluated, bylaws and regulations regarding their use be made, students be made aware of their disadvantages, and samples of the general examinations questions and key answers be distributed to students and teachers to make use of.

Abstract

This research is a thorough study of the role of the outstanding scientist, Ibin Al Haitham, in scientific research. Many scholars attribute the development of scientific research to Islamic scientists, among these was Ibin Al Haitham, who initiated the origins of the modern scientific principles. This study I tried to highlight the role of Arab and Islamic traditions in enriching human culture. This role is exemplified through the scientific canon of Ibin Al Haitham. The study also emphasized the urges of transferring the general heritage and the urges of Ibin Al Haitham in particular. The study, further, includes a presentation of Ibin al Haitham’s scientific mission, his manners, his positions and attitudes and major accomplishments. The study also sought to discover Ibin al haitham’s intellectual attitudes and to locate his basic scientific methods, which depended on induction, syllogism, analogy, preference and the hypothetical method. The study then examined the scientific tools and their importance in scientific research through presenting illustrations from Ibin Al Haitham’s works and commenting on them. This research shows the virtues of this outstanding scientist and his distinguished role in scientific research as he touched on the concepts leading to it. The research then concludes with a call for a revival of the legacy and memory of the Islamic scientists who served humanity and made an important contribution to its heritage.

Abstract

The conventional method for reading/writing information from/on a magnetic media (e.g. magnetic tapes in audio and video recorders, computers etc.) uses what is called an inductive head. This consists of several turns of enemelled wire, wound on a specially prepared former as shown in Fig.1. To write (record) information on the magnetic tape, a modulated current signal is injected into the coil. The current treats (induces) a magnetic field at the free ends of the former (poles) which in turn aligns the magnetic particles deposited on the tape, subsequently producing a record of the injected signal. To retrieve the information (i.e. playback the recorded signals) the prerecorded tape is swiped across the poles of the inductive head. In this case the reverse of the write cycle occurs i.e. the magnetic field from the tape influence the former in such a manner as to cause a current flow through the coil having the same form as the recorded signal. A major disadvantage of this type of head is its speed dependence. Since the head senses the rate of change of field, d?/dt (and not the field itself ? its output becomes greatly dependant' on the speed of the tape. Therefore, in tape system, and using an inductive head, it becomes necessary to use some form of electronic equalization in order to correct errors in the signal, resulting from any variations in the speed of the tape. In addition, because of their bulkiness, they become difficult to implement in applications where high packing densities (video tapes) or multi-track system (computer tapes) are used. A new generation of heads have been developed. The heads use the magneto-resistive effect for the read operation and a simplified inductive approach for the write operation.

Abstract

Tris (acetylacetonato) cobalt (III), (Co(acac)3), has been used to catalyze o-silylation reactions of R 3 Siff (R.z.Et,Et0) with R OH (Rt-Et, i-Pr, t-.Bu and C6Hj-). No reaction has been observed at room temperature, but the reaction is apparently enhanced when carried out at a higher temperature. The rate of the reaction varies with varying the concentration of the saline or the alcohol. Using different types of alcohols and silanes greatly affects the rate of the reaction. The rate of the reaction is affected by varying the concentration of the complex (Co(acaci6)).

Abstract

Calibration graphs have been obtained for mercury, zinc and copper ions using buffered (pH 7।4) stream water and centrifuged stream water samples. Two hypothesis explaining the shape of the obtained calibration graphs have been suggested; one refers the shape to the adsorption of-trace elements on the suspended particles and on the container surfaces, the other hypotheses refers the shape of calibration graphs to the presence of chemical interference. The strength of the two hypotheses has been compared. The effect of time on the shape of the calibration graphs has also been investigated.

Abstract

The kinetics and mechanism of hydrolysis of a series of substituted benzylidene benzoylhydrazones (X — BBH) have been studied at five different temperatures in the range 25 — 45°c by U। V. -visible spectrophotometry. The hydrolysis reactions were found to follow first - order kinetics. A mechanism has been postulated in which the attack of water on the protonated substrate is subject to general base catalysis. This mechanism has been supported by the effect of anion concentration of buffer, at constant pH, on the observed rate constant. The Bronsted ?-value for the hydrolysis reaction is 0.73. Hammett correlations, Arrhenius and thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The pKa values for the conjugate acids for benzylidene benzoylhydrazones derivatives (X - BBH) have been determined.

Abstract

The hydrodynamic pressure distribution on the wall of a vibrating water tank is traditionally expressed as a summation of two components; an impulsive component and a convective one obtained by separating the potential function into two parts. This requires solving Laplace's equation in two stages each with a separate set of boundary conditions. The following is one step systematic solution to the problem in a frame moving with the tank. It proves to be simple, compact and could lead to the impulsive, frequency independent and the convective, frequency dependent components of pressure at the water tank wall.

Abstract

The polarographic behaviors of some arylidene-2-pyridyl hydrazones have been studied in aqueous Britton - Robinson buffer solution containing 40% ethanol using DC polarographic technique। In the pH range 1.9 - 6.4 the observed single irreversible 4 - electron reduction wave is attributed to the splitting of the N - N bond and saturation of C = N centre. All compounds studied are polarographically inactive in alkaline medium. The effect of pH on the limiting current and E 112 as well as the reduction mechanism and the effect of substituent's are discussed and compared with similar compounds. The kinetic parameters of the electrode reaction have been calculated.

Abstract

We establish the equivalence between the existence of a cyclic projective right C-module P such that P/J (BP) is semisimple and BP is finitely generated (B = End (Pc)) and the existence of an idempotent element e in c such that trace (Pc) is finitely generated (and equals CeC) and C/S is semisimple where S is the intersection of all maximal left ideals of C not containing the trace ideal of Pc।

Abstract

Trace metal concentrations in spring-water of a number of springs around Nablus have been determined। Samples of these waters were taken during November and December of 1985, acidefied with HNO3 to pH 1.5 and then analyzed for their content of lead, copper, zinc, nickel, iron, manganese, magnesium, calcium and hydrogen ions. The method of analysis used was flame atomic absorption spectroscopy with an acetylene -air flame. Hydrogen ion concentration was measured using pH-meter The results showed very low concentrations (well below the safe limits) of lead copper, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese. The pH of the samples studied was within the allowed range. High concentrations of magnesium were found in many samples ; but not high enough to cause a risk. The concentration of calcium in almost all the samples studied was very high and higher than the allowed limit. The use of these waters is harmful to industry and house-hold equipment and probably has an influence in developing kidney stones in persons having the potential for developing kidney stones.

Abstract

In a submerged rigid oil storage tank it is possible to evaluate the internal and external hydrodynamic forces separately. Internally the forces are due to internal waves generated at the oil-water interface. Externally, they are due to radiated waves. When such a tank is made of steel, at it is usually the case, the internal and external forces get coupled through the flexibility of the shell, hence their solutions become inseparable. The following is an analytical treatment for the case of a flexible tank it expands the solution of the rigid tank to include the shell flexibility effect. The submerged tank is assumed to be subject to a harmonic lateral ground excitation.

Abstract

A method for the spectrophotometric determination of uranium (VI) by complexation with Di-2-pyridyl ketone benzoylhydrazone (DPKBH) in 50% (v/v) ethanolic solution is described। Uranium (VI) forms a 1:2 complex with DPKBH. The complex has a maximum absorbance at 377 um. Beer's law is obeyed over the range 0, 2 - 12 ug.m1' 1. The effect of pH, excess reagent, percentage of ethanol (v/v), stability of the complex and the tolerance limit of many metal ions and common anions have been reported. The method has been applied to the determination of uranium in Egyptian monazite sand.

Abstract

The kinetics of oxidation of cobalt (II) by iron (III) in the presence of 1, 10 phenanthroline has been investigated spectrophotometrically। Hydrogen ions exhibited an inhibitory effect on the rate of the reaction while 1,10 phenanthroline showed an accelerating effect The order with respect to iron (III) was found to be unity. On the other hand, the order with respect to cobalt varies with its concentration being 0.3+ 0.004 at high concentration and 0.791-0.019 at low concentrations. A plausible mechanism was postulated and a rate law was derived that accounted for the various experimental results obtained.

Abstract

In this study we have measured the effect of root and foliar treatments of marrow plants with 03 - 7।3 ppm copper solutions. Both types of treatment resulted in a substantial inhibition of growth of plant. This inhibition was compared for the various parts of plant (roots, stern, leaves and fruits) and for the two types of treatment. The concentration and the total content of copper in the various parts of treated plants were measured and compared with each other. The percentage of copper taken by plant from the total amount of copper added during the treatment of marrow plants was found to be very small. This percentage was found to be very small. This percentage was found higher in foliar - treated plants than in root - treated plants. It was also higher front dilute copper solutions than front more concentrated copper solutions.

Abstract

Chemical analysis was carried out on underground water samples taken from 192 wells, distributed throughout the West Bank of Jordan। The samples were collected twice; in 1982 and 1987. Water samples were classified on the basis of their salinity, sodium concentration, salinity hazard - sodium hazard, and suitability for irrigation. Water samples from different wells in different localities differed largely in their qualities. The results also showed a decline with time in water quality in the samples examined, especially in Jericho and the Jordan valley. The implications of the results on agriculture in the West Bank are also discussed.

Abstract

The effects of different seed treatments on the germination percentage and rate of Gundelia tournefortii seeds were studied. Seeds were collected from Jamaeen area near Nablus city. The normal healthy seeds were separated from small shrinked seed and used in the different trails. Three experiments were conducted in which the effect of presoaking, scarification and stratification on the seed germination was investigated. The higher germination percentage (48%) was obtained when the outer seed coat was removed after the seeds were presoaked in water. This percentage was highly significant than other results obtained with the other treatments. The use of concentrated sulfuric acid for 15 and 30 minutes to tender the seed coat didn't increase the germination percentage of the treated seeds over that of the control Similar effects was also exhibited when the seeds were soaked in hot water for different intervals. Cold stratification at 4-5' didn't significantly increase the germination percentage of the seeds.

Abstract

The variation of the molar volume, V, and the glass transition temperature, TQ with the average coordination number, m, for twenty-three glass compositions. belonging to the Ge15SbxS85-x and Ge20SbxS80-x families of the Ge-Sb-S system, is reported and discussed. The V-m dependence for the Ge15SbxS85-x family shows a minimum in V at m=2.4 which is attributed to the floppy-to-rigid transition in network glasses. For both families of the glasses examined, the V-m and Tg-m dependences show peaks at m=2.52 for Ge15SbxS85-x and at m=2.56 for Ge20SbxS80-x, corresponding to the respective stoichiometric composition for each family. These features are found to be consistent with topological and chemically ordered covalent network models proposed for the structure of these glasses.

Two studies using three ruminally cannulated beef steers in the first one fed a roughage diet (98% chopped alfalfa at maintenance) and 12 beef steers in the second fed limited ration (85% adlib intake) composed of 90% concentrate diet (80% cracked corn, 10% soybean meal), and 10% chopped alfalfa were allotted to treatment groups receiving a supplement of either monensin / tylan (m27।5 ppm / 11 ppm), lasalocid (33 ppm) or a daily rotation of the two ionophores to examine the effect of the ionophores on rumen population of anaerobic fungi over time and the relationship between fungal numbers and methane production. In the first study, nylon bags containing leaf blades of 5mm length were incubated for 24 hrs in the rumen. Samples were counted on days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 28 Fungi sporangia on blades were counted microscopically (00x). Study 2, steers were assigned as above and after methane production was measured using indirect respiration calorimetry, samples of rumen contents were collected by stomach tube pretreatment, and on days 2, S, 16, and 45 after initiation of ionophore treatments. Differences of fungi numbers over time and between treatments were not significant, yet, there was a trend of initial ionophore inhibition on fungi with limited evidence of adaptation over time there was a positive correlation (P <>

Abstract

TASTRAK, a solid state nuclear track detector has been used to measure indoor radon concentrations at Hebron University। Fifty- four radon pot detectors were mounted in the four university buildings. It was found that the radon concentrations vary considerably from about 1 Bq/m 3 to 250 Bq/m3 The average radon concentrations vary from 20.5 Bq/m3 in the Main Building to 41.3 Bq/m3 in the Agriculture Building. The average radon concentration in the four buildings is found to be 29.8 Bq/m 3. This leads to an average effective dose equivalent of 1.49 mSvly. This dose is slightly higher than the global value of 1.3 mSv/y. Elevated radon concentrations have been found in few rooms. However, these concentrations are well below the action level of 150 Bq/m3.

Abstract

For an existing reinforced concrete or steel structure the evaluation of the stiffness matrix may be hampered by certain physical limitations such as material deterioration resulting from prolonged use an adverse or in a corrosive environment। The following is a method that allows the determination of the member stiffness of an indeterminate truss through a minimization technique of a properly constructed Error Function. Thus exact sectional and material properties do not have to be known a priori.

Abstract

Noire studied several properties of weak continuity in Proc। Amer. Math. Soc. 46(1), 120-124. In this paper it is shown that similar to most of the results of the above paper still hold for closure and strong continuity. Example 2 is a counterexample to a corollary to Theorem 6 of Long and Herrington. Theorem 12 of our paper is a sharper result to Theorem 5 of Noire. Several decomposition theorems of closure and strong continuity are obtained.

Abstract

A differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetric (DP-CSV) method for determination of emodin in Britton- Robinson buffer (pH2) at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMIDE) is described। The method is based on measuring the reductive peak height at —0.25V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The linear relationship between the peak current and emodin concentration allowed the voltarnmetric determination of emodin over a wide concentration range 1.0 X 10-2 —2.5 X10-6 M, with a relative standard deviation of 3.3% (10 determinations at 1 X 10-2 M). Adsorption of emodin at HMDE enabled a detection limit of 2X10-1°M after 3 min accumulation at 0.0V. The applicability of the suggested method was found to be suitable for the determination of emodin in roots, stems and leaves of Rumex cyprius plant.

Abstract

Mathematics and computer science are closely linked with each other, and in many respects, the functions of computer related elements might be interpreted using mathematical approaches। In this paper the strong correlation that exist between computer software and hardware elements (logic devices, digital circuits and logical processing) and discrete mathematics (propositions and quantified assertions) will be demonstrated. This will pave the way for a better understanding of the operations of basic computer circuits and lay the foundation for developing new computer related algorithms.

Abstract

This paper presents simple cost models that contain small number of items that will be used for estimating costs of contracts। Twenty-eight contracts that contain large number of items were used in this study, for the development of these models. Cost significant philosophy was used as an approach to develop the models. This study has shown that about 80% of the total cost of a project are contained within 20% of the items. These items are called cost significant items. Each item has a value greater or equal to the mean item value. These models can be used only for multi-story residential buildings. The developed construction cost model contains about 25% of the items while the developed finishing cost model contains about 23% of the items. The expected accuracy for both cost models is within + 5% and the achieved accuracy is within + 7%.

Abstract

Some naturally occurring plasmids like ColEl and ColK have been found to harbor site-specific recombination sequences, the core regions of such sequences have shown 82% homology when so aligned। The high degree of homology was the basis for testing the possibility of recombination between them. The sequences were cloned in the vector pUC18 in opposite orientation and introduced into E.coli cells and the analysis of the DNA harvested from the transformed cells showed that the sequences had undergone recombination, such recombination, such recombination was of the site-specific mode. No sequence deletion was detected, as was the case with such sequences when they were in the same orientation, Interestingly the event of recombination in this case resulted in the inversion of the region located between the recombination sites of the two cloned fragments.
